According to a survey by USA Triathlon and TribeGroup, in Triathlete
Magazine "Training" article by Lance Watson and Lucy Smith, the number one reason people participate in triathlon is
"For the personal challenge".
Other motivational reasons given in the survey included -
"I am inspired when I see a challenged athlete participating"
"Completing a race is an emotional or spiritual experience"
"I participate in triathlon for the socual reasons"
While triathlon is indeed a physical challenge, the most common reasons a lot of us participate are either emotional, personal, or social.
Triathlete and multiple Ironman finished Dr. JéAnna Lanza Abbott, writes in an article for
Vibrant Nation her top ten reasons to participate in triathlon.
1. You can eat anything you want.
2. It builds confidence that carries over to other aspects of your life.
3. Camaraderie.
4. It creates positive psychological well-being.
5. It promotes hope.
6. It promotes resilience to adversity- the ability to fail and be okay is powerful.
7. Optimism: You start to view the world in a more positive frame.
8. It keeps you young; physically, mentally, and emotionally.
9. It promotes a healthy lifestyle.
10. It makes you feel good about the way you look.
